The first visit to
the site revealed an early Graham Gunn, Merchant Builder
dwelling in good condition and fortuitously placed at the rear
of the site. Tea on the lawn with the architecturally
knowledgeable clients, owners of a local bookshop, cemented my
intention to preserve the Gunn Dwelling and extend the new
building preserving a large part of the existing lawn.
The emphasis by client and architect on simplicity and a
minimalist view of classic modernism is maintained throughout
the residence. The architect extends the study of the
architecture of Southern California and Arizona while
maintaining a realist view to materials and life style inherent
in a coastal dwelling.
The rock fireplace being constructed out of stone removed from
the site and the preservation of the existing garden and lawn
area gives the client a birth relationship to the new works, it
as if the new dwelling has grown out of the site. The use
of steel structural fascia to obtain the large cantilevered
carport and dynamic skylights allows the dwelling float above
the site preserving the open lawn feel and courtyards.
